When buying CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) Cameras, we require a recorder to store recordings from the camera, this is where NVR (Network Video Recorder) and DVR (Digital Video Recorder) come into play. You might wonder, what are the differences between the two and which one best fits your CCTV Camera. Read on to find out more on the benefits and the differences between NVR and DVR!

Firstly, DVRs are usually paired with Analogue Cameras, whereas NVRs are usually paired with IP (Internet Protocol) Cameras. NVRs can either be connected to IP Cameras through PoE (Power over Ethernet) or through WiFi wirelessly. DVRs on the other hand connect uncompressed recordings through coaxial cables and are compressed into digital recording before being transferred to an electronic device. The difference in how it is paired also makes NVRs easier to set up compared to DVRs. This is because of its benefit of being able to use the internet instead of coaxial cables. This means that NVRs can be located further from the CCTV Camera (IP) compared to DVRs that depend on how far the coaxial cables can reach the Analogue Cameras.

Secondly, the prices between the two greatly varies, but is also reasonable due to the difference in its features. Since NVRs are paired with IP Cameras, there are more features available such as better lighting, audio & video quality, simplicity of configuration, zoom and tracking. The advancement in technology in NVRs is what makes it cost more compared to DVRs. DVRs on the other hand are cheaper but do not have as good video and audio quality, have less features and have higher maintenance costs. This is due to the fact that it depends purely on the coaxial cable for connection, which can easily be damaged especially in outdoor locations, which is expensive to maintain.

Therefore, there are various differences between DVRs and NVRs. Which one is more compatible depends on the location, feature and price customers are willing to pay for a CCTV [Camera and NVR/DVR]. The way the products are setup is also vital for the longevity of the products, such as setting up the coaxial cable in the right location to prevent damage.
